Required Education in the Protection of Human Research Participants

On August 25, 2000, the National Institute of Health (NIH) released a revised guide titled: "Required Education in the Protection of Human Research Participants."

The document is available at:

http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-00-039.html

This guide announces as a policy that NIH will require education on the protection of human research participants for all investigators submitting
NIH applications for grants or proposals for contracts or receiving new or non-competing awards for research involving human subjects. The necessary NIH Computer Based Training (CBT) to satisfy this requirement is available as "Researchers and Research Staff: CBT on protecting human subjects" at:

http://ohsr.od.nih.gov

The Missouri S&T Campus IRB review now requires that all key personnel involved in a proposed study complete the NIH training. Copies of the Certificate of Completion from the NIH training must accompany the Missouri S&T Campus IRB Application for all key personnel, i.e., all individuals responsible for the design and conduct of the study.
